Lopetrone Family Update

Antonio di Petrone was born in Figline, Italy in the 1500s and moved his family to San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy, where he grew and sold wheat. Antonio had two sons and it is from these two sons the Lopetrone family developed.

The early 1500s was a time when surnames were just becoming fashionable. Pasquale Lopetrone’s research of tax, birth, marriage and death records shows how the name was transformed from di Petrone to Lo Petrone and finally Lopetrone in the mid 1700s.

Pasquale, a historical architect, has recreated the first 11 generations of the Lopetrone Family with the help of the records in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy. My branch, Domenico 1836 Branch, is the first branch to be completed with 17 generations. There are a number of us who are researching our Lopetrone Family History and you can find some of us on Ancestry.com.

Several years ago, Pasquale Lopetrone set out to find all the Lopetrones in the World to reunite them. After all, we all descend from Antonio di Petrone making us cousins.

Pasquale has also created a group on Facebook called: Lopetrone in the World so that we can reconnect. If you are a descendant of a Lopetrone, please join us on Facebook.

The Show, promoted from the Province on my proposal, was treated from Pasquale Lopetrone (Right). It wanted to remember the most important figures of the Calabrian monachesimo: Gioacchino from Flower, San Francesco from Paola, San Nile, San Daniele, Beato Angelo d'Acri, Sant'Umile. The Show went through the most important town of our province and collected a considerable success.

La Mostra, promossa dalla Provincia su mia proposta, è stata curata da Lopetrone (Right). Ha voluto ricordare le più importanti figure del monachesimo calabrese: Gioacchino da Fiore, San Francesco da Paola, San Nilo, San Daniele, Beato Angelo d’Acri, Sant’Umile. John and Rosa - First Generation in Canada

In May, I went to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada with my mother to see her brother.They are the last two from the first generation of Penzera's that came to Canada in the 50's. My mother is Rosa Lopetrone and her brother is Giovanni Lopetrone. Rosa Lopetrone lives in Sarnia, Canada.

My uncle John (Giovanni) is now 82 years old and my mother Rosa Lopetrone Andali will be 77 this November. They are first cousins to Pasquale Lopetrone's father. They are the children of Guiseppe and Angela Maria (Chiodo) Lopetrone.

The picture with the two ladies, are my mom, Rosa Lopetrone and Angela Pecorelli wife of the late Francesco Pecorelli (Penzera) son of Guiseppe and Angela Maria (Chiodo) Lopetrone. Angela Pecorelli also resides in Victoria, B.C. These people are our first generation to Canada and the last remaining.

On July 28, 2008, Lech Walesa was at Holy Severina to promote cooperation. Lech Walesa, is the Nobel peace prize recipient and former President of Poland, Leader of the Solidarity movement and the Polish revolution, who helped overcome the cold war, between east and west, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the agreement of Warsaw with the autonomy from Moscow of the former Soviet Union.

Pasqual accompanied Lech Walesa in the visit of the Castle of Holy Severina and dined at the Castle with d Lech Walesa and his delegation.

The Mayor of Holy Severina gave to Lech Walesa the book written from Pasqual "THE CASTLE OF HOLY SEVERINA".

Oggi, 28 luglio 2008, Lech Walesa è stato a Santa Severina per promuovere delle intese di cooperazione.

Lech Walesa è il leader politico premio Nobel per la pace, ex Presidente della Polonia, capo di Solidarnosc e della rivoluzione polacca, da cui è scaturita il superamento della guerra fredda, tra est e ovest, la caduta del muro di Berlino e la disintegrazione del patto di Varsavia con l'autonomia da Mosca degli ex stati filo sovietici.

Beppe lived in Nomadelfia and is buried there.

In the past year, during the months when Beppe was near death, the RAI (Radio Italian Television) has made a movie on the history of Nomadelfia and its founder, a priest named Don Zeno. The scriptwriters of the film, "Mr. ZENO, The man Of NOMADELFIA", they have reconstructed the scenes of the fiction looking at the book of Joe Don ZENO 100 Years, that it is a very beautiful work, introduced by the greatest Italian journalists and by eminent religious personalities and politics. Tuesday and Wednesday, in two episodes, RAI, through the channels television Italian public, transmit the fiction "Mr. ZENO The man Of NOMADELFIA", a film that I recommend you to see, because Don Zeno is certainly the man that has animated a great revolution, showing to the world that can be been all brothers and all can be lived with few, but with great dignity if he is in peace with God.

Delta and I placed first in 2 of the riding events we entered. Talk about a shock! When they called my name I about fell off the horse!

Delta and I won 2 blue ribbons, one in horsemanship, one in the pleasure class. Delta kept her head down like a pleasure horse and she did a pivot turn. Well, she NEVER keeps her head down and she has NEVER done a pivot turn!

I thought it was a joke when I won but I was told I rode prefect, but I still didn't believe it. I still cannot believe it. Someone was looking down on us because she was playing with the bit, but that kept her head down when none of the other horses kept their heads down and she doesn't normally either!

After all the attention, she was ready to have her saddle off and get out side.

Out-of-town flair has hit the small city of Sarnia thanks to the launch of Foo-Silly's Pizzeria & Pub.

The London Line restaurant was Overtime until Salvatore Sam Federico acquired it this past November. Federico is the grandson of Salvatore Lopetrone, the former owner of Riverside Pizza, and was previously the chef at Bonnie Doon Golf Course. This is where he thought of the name, as Foo-Silly is a pasta dish he used to prepare often.

It was an easy pasta, but a pain in the ass to make, he laughed. So we'd get silly late in the shift and shout out Foo-Silly!'

The Greyhound softball squad swept a twin-bill from the Mustangs Monday.

Valley plated eight runs in the first to cruise to the initial victory.

Valley pitcher Emily Donato limited the Mustangs to two hits while striking out five and walking one.

At the plate, Donato — with a homer and two RBIs — was among a handful of productive Greyhounds. Also, Brooke Belmont registered a triple and drove in three runs, Casey Nichols had three RBIs, Kara McGraw was 2-for-2 with a round-tripper and a pair of RBIs, Rachael Hamrick, Heather Tolley and Madison McDermott supplied two RBIs apiece, and Caitlin Elliott was 1-for-2.

Virginia Williams (two RBIs) and Courtney Worrell were both 1-for-2 for Mount Hope.

In the nightcap, VHS led 6-2 after three innings but erupted for 15 runs in the last two frames.

Crystal Jordan (3-for-5, double) and Megan Begley (2-for-4, double) drove in four runs each for the winners. Also, Elizabeth Beard was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, Keeley Abbott was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and McDermott (2-for-4), Sabrina Lopetrone (2-for-5), Elliott (double) and Megan Willis each provided one RBI.

For Mount Hope, L. Laramee drove in two runs and Amanda Syner and A. Wingrove had one RBI each.

Elliott secured the mound win with relief help from Willis. Each pitcher struck out three Mustangs.

On the afternoon, Valley was aided by 18 Mount Hope errors.

Easter 2008

Easter Traditions by Cynthia Skupny-Titello

This Easter will be spent at home with my family, my daughters and my mother.

We always had a ham, sausage, and head cheese growing up in my Polish Russian house mix, but tradition on my mother Russian Orthodox side has deemed that this year only (maybe more after, we will see how it turns out) we will be trying a veal roast with the traditional Russian Paska Bread. While I was growing up, the Polish Traditions of Sausage, Potatoes and the like prevailed. I married an Italian so for Easter with his family, we ALWAYS have lasagna. This year, we are doing the Russian/ Austrian thing.

We are going all out to remind my mom of her roots from Austria… Veal Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Squash, Beans, Paska, Eggs, Caviar, etc. Mom Rosemary is 82 and has little to no memory of what she went through during the depression; this is a blessing, so we are going to remind her of better times while we still can before she loses all of her faculties.

My favorite Easter Candy is Peeps!!

If weather allows, we will do an Easter egg hunt outside, but we are in Michigan so…. Usually indoors

We must dye Easter eggs, due to the orthodox traditions in our extended family, it is necessary and most called for. Orthodox religions have extremely intricate designs to their eggs and there is a very special story attached to each egg, not only this, but the “sugar” eggs with the huge intricate designs inside are also a tradition. Mine are usually the simple no frills things that kids can easily do along with the fact that I am now a single mom and work full time so… the easier the better, but I really miss the very, very long hours spent doing the Russian eggs… there a few websites that sell these and if anyone gets a chance, this is worth a look simply for the artistry involved in these designs.

I personally am very happy to have shared so many family holidays with my Polish, Russian, Austrian, Italian, and all the rest melting pot family members who have been a grace, an inspiration and a driving force in who I am and what my family is.

My wish for our Lopetrone family is that everyone has a very special day, no matter how distant or how far away, that everyone finds by the grace of God what it is they are searching for and that one day, hopefully soon, everyone can come together as “one big family” because when you come right down to it, we all descend from a common person in Christ, … blood ties are not always the ties that bind. Sometimes, ties that bind are simply a great friend, a cousin or a cousin by marriage. Bless us all this season and for all seasons to come.

Easter Memories – Annie Smith

We will spend Easter at our house with my parents who just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

My favorite Easter candy is Reeses Peanut Butter Eggs. Since my furry guys don't have thumbs to pick up the eggs, we forgo Easter egg hunts here.

As children, my cousin Carol Marchelitis-Heppner and I spent a great deal of time together. Coloring eggs with the Marchelitis gang, was the funniest thing you can imagine. I remember one year artist Carol drew on an egg for what seemed to be forever, it was perfect and one of her brothers [I'm not naming names] picked up the egg to look at it and squeezed a little hard and. . . crunch!!!! All that work gone. We had good times coloring eggs and had fun no matter what we did, walking down town and picking out Easter Cards with Carol is another of my favorite memories. When she looked at a greeting card that read, “Happy Easter, Happy Spring,” she knew it was the card to get her parents… because it was a 2 for 1 – two greeting for the price of one. We still wish each other “Happy Easter , Happy Spring!”

We’d like to wish all the Lopetrones in the World a Happy Bunny Day. Oh yeah and Happy Easter- Happy Spring!!!!!

Our family wishes that all the Lopetrone's will have a most wonderful and Blessed Easter. This is a most fantastic day in the Christian Faith and the feast we have to celebrate this wonderful day is one of the best for the year.

Our family here in Anchorage will attend Mass and we will have a wonderful time together on this wonderful day sharing a fantastic meal. We normally have a Ham dinner with what everyone likes the most. It seems that most of my family loves Chocolate the best and some eggs will be colored.

I wish that I could meet all the Lopetrone's in this world even though I know this is impossible. We have been Blessed with meeting and spending time with Pasquale and his family, and knowing you Carol. We wish all a very happy, Healthy, and wonderful Easter Sunday and all of God's Love and Blessings.

Oggi SGF si è svegliata coperta da 2 piedi di neve. Ancora continua a nevicare. Le previsioni indicano che la neve cadrà ancora copiaso per tutto il giorno a causa di queste correnti fredde che vengono dall'est (Balcani e Siberia). Ti mando due foto.

Today SGF has awakened covered in 2 feet of snow. It still continuous to snow. The predictions indicate that the snow will fall all day because of cold currents that come from the east (Balkans and Siberia). I send two photograph.

Yesterday, 22 September, we celebrated my father's 80th birthday.

We celebrated his birthday in the restaurant of my brother (agriturismo Silvana Mansio).
My father lives together with Halina, his Polish companion, joining us yesterday was the daughter of Halina, Ursula, who lives in Verona.

At the party were the three children (Pasquale, Francis and Filomena) with the respective families,
there was besides the brother of my father (Luigi Lopetrone with his/her/their wife Maria) and also his/her niece Filomena with her husband and his/her daughter. In total we were 21 people. .
My mother was very missed! She died 10 years ago and we've missed her since.

My father has been happy of the party that we have organized. To end evening we have also turned on 80 fires of artifice to close the beautiful evening in joy.

This photo is an image of the Sila at the end of August (this is an angle of mountain that I see from my country house). You can see the trees - they are very green, but the clearings have the dry grass: it has not rained here since May 14.

This is a panoramic photograph of SGF, it is not easy to photograph. It is a very large country situated in the mountain. It has 20.000 inhabitants, but the number of its houses is very large and would be able to contain at least 50.000 inhabitants.

My cousin, Antonio Lopetrone, and his family came from Calabria to Canada to visit our family. In late June, 2007, we had the pleasure of meeting and spending quite a bit of time with my cousin and his family.

This trip was their first plane ride and their first time to Canada.

We enjoyed ourselves and they even experienced a field hockey game for the first time. This photo shows my son’s soccer game.

San Giovanni in Fiore Tidbits

Today, I made a visit in to the sea. I have taken this photo of the snails on a small cactuses.

Beppe Lopetrone (above) has come to find me, so that I could accompany him to the Sila. The view outside the car is the place where I have my house in Sila.
.
Beppe plans a photo shoot in the area. He says that the locations that are in Calabria are more original in comparison to others. He has taken back some photo in these special places where I have brought him. The photo shoot will take place very soon.

The pink house is a wood house of the 1920 era, a structure typical of the Sila. This type of cottage once was normal, now ancient. Most are in disrepair and nobody has reconstructed them to their former state. (Silvana Mansio)

These pine trees are very tall (120 feet around) and very big (6 -7 feet around of diameter). These trees are not near in the pink house, but 3 miles away. (Camigliatello)

This is the wine cellar of the restaurant "La Tavernetta" (Campo San Lorenzo- Camigliatello).

The ham in the foreground was seasoned for 24 months. Johnny Lopetrone of Alaska has eaten at my house the "sozizza" (sausage) and the "supressata", he knows the taste and the quality of these foods. In the photo you see Caterina, my wife, Beppe Lopetrone, and Pietro Lecce the owner of the restaurant "La Tavernetta", very famous in Italy.

This is an old postcard of Saint Severina taken back in 1905. The road is somewhat the same from how it is shown on the postcard. I have sent to you this postcard to make you understand how your great grandfather, Anthony Lopetrone, traveled from SGF to Cosenza. In Italy, it is called -- Carriage to Horses.

This cover is called "vineyard," because the decoration is constituted by grape's clusters, shoots and leaves of the grapevine. In the Bible the vineyard assumes many meanings. Also in the art of the first Christians the figuration of the vineyard is very frequent for the Christian symbolism.
.
To think about it, the relationship between the matrimonial bed and the vineyard is very pertinent. Angela Lopetrone is the daughter of late Saverio Lopetrone and Teresa Arcuri, the ex pizzaiolo.

My Parents

This is my mother and father. My mother is Rosa Lopetrone 1931, born of Angela Maria Ciodo and Guiseppe Lopetrone di Penzera. This is a photo when my mother first came to Canada to join her husband who had left her two years prior to make a better life for them. My father first met my eldest brother Gaetano when he was two years old.

This second photo is from last November 2006. They are still healthy and very much active with their family and friends. My parents had five children, Gaetano (Guy), Joseph, Mary (that's me), Laura and John.

Our last name is Andali and my father was from San Giovanni in Fiore, (pedraro).

Delta looks so much better now, she was really thin back then (when this photo was taken), she's a good girl I rode her a few times last week, she's a great horse, I love her and she's finally learning about affection, I don't think anyone ever gave her hugs and kisses before. We were riding for what seemed like hours tonight, I rode Sarge and Ralphie rode Delta, trying out his new saddle Then Sue (our friend) was teaching us how to do the trail course, Sarge is really good at that, Delta wouldn't do it, I had her doing it awhile ago but she wouldn't do it for Ralphie today,

Family Reunion

The great grandchildren of Antonio and Salvatore Lopetrone met in California on January of 2007.

Carol Heppner (photo above) is the great granddaughter of Antonio Lopetrone. Tony Petrone is the great grandson of Salvatore Lopetrone (He and his wife Linda are seen in the photo above). Their family lost contact over the years and were reunited via email about two years ago. Antonio and Salvatore changed their name to Petrone when they moved to the USA.

Here is the white fir of 90 years, about 34 meters tall, as it flies in the skies of S Giovanni in F, transported by a great helicopter. This great plant taken from the woods of the Sila, has been chosen as the Christmas tree that will be used in S Pietro Plaza, Vatican - Rome. The environmentalists have pushed forth a great polemic for the cut of this enormous conifer.

This is recent photograph (late Aug/06) of a visit from my first cousin Stefano Lopetrone and his friends (also visiting from Italy). The group of 5 visited several cities in the US and then came to Windsor, in Ontario, Canada, before going to Toronto then home.

The photo is a group shot and consists of Stefano (sitting, second from right in a striped shirt) and myself (Stefano's father & my mother are siblings), I'm standing on the right in a jean jacket. The rest of the gang are my husband Tom (centre in brown shirt) and Stefano's travelling companions.

This photo symbolizes the first meeting of cousins in Canada and hopefully the start of a continued family connection.

Our trip was absolutely fantastic and Pasquale and Caterina are absolutely wonderful. We were treated as though we were long lost family and we are considered new family members. They have two fine sons who always gave us a hug every time they saw us.

The first night we had dinner at a small restaurant -- if you didn't know it was there you would miss it entirely. The cook and owner was a gentleman named Saverio, I hope this is the right spelling, and he is a marvelous cook and extremely friendly. His English was very good and we hand a wonderful evening and he helped with some of the translations. Even though neither of us spoke the others language well we were at most times making each other understand our thoughts.

Pasquale took us to many wonderful places and we saw where my grandfather lived, where he worked, and the 11 houses side by side where the rest of the family lived.

When we spoke about you (Carol Heppner) he stated that he loves you like a sister and that you have helped him in many wonderful ways. Yes, my love I did give him a very big hug from you. All the rest of his family now claims us as family and of course this makes me feel wonderful.

Barbara and Caterina got along famously and to tell you the truth I thought she was going to cry when we said our last good byes. They are very wonderful people. As all Italians have said before we do like people.

When looking for my Mom's father's family we were in a very old town known as Borgia and we stopped at a small square and he started asking question and all the old gentlemen sitting there all wanted to help and we took one older for a short drive and he lead us to someone else who started making phone calls and I found out he was calling one of the last Machienzies in the area and then we all went to a small cafe and had coffee and water and spent time together.

We went to Pasquale's beautiful summer house where they had a garden and it was in a beautiful picturesque area. Did you know that one of his 5 sub offices is in a castle? We have pictures of him unlocking the castle door and he stated that this was his castle.

Not only is he an Architect he is also in charge of great restoration in his area as he is employed by the Italian government in the Borough of Culture. He took us where the average person would never be and have seen places and things that will boggle your mind. Like a 400 year old book with our family names in it. Well, my dear cousins I must close for now and will write more later. This trip and my new family will have a very special place in my heart forever.
